Step back in time on this Mendocino County: Skunk Train Pudding Creek Train Ride, a scenic and historic railway experience.
Departing from Fort Bragg’s Skunk Train Depot, this 7-mile round-trip journey takes you through the breath-taking Pudding Creek Estuary, where towering redwoods and diverse wildlife create a truly immersive experience.
This railway has been in operation since 1885, originally built to transport logging crews deep into the forest. The train earned its "Skunk Train" nickname in 1925, when gasoline-powered motorcars with crude oil stoves were introduced—locals joked, “You could smell them before you could see them.” Today, the only thing that lingers is the charm of this vintage train ride.
As you make your way toward Glen Blair, keep an eye out for ospreys, egrets and blue herons thriving in this untouched ecosystem. Along the route, you’ll pass through towering Coastal Redwoods, some of the oldest trees in California.
After your ride, explore the Model Railroad Museum, included with your ticket. This detailed exhibit brings Mendocino’s rich logging history to life, featuring over 1,300 feet of track, intricate trestles and scale models of historic logging sites.
